Berlin River Cruise

The city administration has decided not to restore this clock tower as a reminder to all of what the city has gone through.

It was disgustingly hot, we had a free day and spent the morning in the shopping centre and then decided to take a boat trip through the canals and river Spree that wound there way around the city.

A very clever artist has painted this mural on the side and front of a building.

The Communists built this communications tower to show the west that their engineering skills were as good as theirs.  However, (and you can't see this very well in the photo) no matter what time of day the sunlight shining on it creates a cross and of course the East Germans saw this as the crucifix and it was a source of inspiration and hope. The Communists tried everything to stop the reflection, including painting the bulb black, but they could not get rid of the cross.

The rest of this building has been demolished and not replaced

At one point the hippies actually gave us a finger!!

NOtice how the middle section of this bridge is not original. West Berlin were not fussy about replacing damaged buildings and infrastructure with replica original work and so there are buildings and as in this case sections that are out of place with the original architecture and style.
